Luton is a small town that may not be as popular as other tourist destinations in the UK, but it does offer a lot of tourist attractions including Luton Hoo Estate Walled Garden, Barton Hills National Nature Reserve, Stockwood Park, Someries Castle, Hat Factory Arts Centre, and more.
A brief history of Luton. Luton owes its existence to its situation. Just to the north of the town are the springs that give rise to the River Lea and, all around, are the chalk hills. Over the years, the river has played an important part in the life of the town, not least in the powering of water mills that were recorded in the Domesday Book
Stockwood Park A former country estate, this park that spans 100 hectares may be found on the southeastern edge of Luton. The Stockwood House, which was built in 1740, was demolished in the 1960s, and its stables and walled gardens are now home to the Stockwood Discovery Centre.
Luton is recorded in the Domesday Book as Loitone and Lintone. One of the largest churches in Bedfordshire, St Mary's Church, was built in the 12th century. There are local museums which explore Luton's history in Wardown Park and Stockwood Park. Luton was once known for hatmaking and also had a large Vauxhall Motors factory.
